Invention Description/ Abstract:

Reliance on non-digitized radiology images hampers healthcare efficiency and quality. Physical films are poorly archived, leading to inaccuracies due to lost or misplaced records. Sharing these films between doctors or hospitals is cumbersome, delaying collaboration and second opinions. Attempts to digitize images by photographing films result in low-resolution pictures, increasing the risk of misinterpretation. Sending image results via unsecured messaging apps like WhatsApp poses data security risks, compromising patient confidentiality. Transferring physical films to other hospitals is inefficient, especially for patients needing referrals. Patients often mishandle these films, making them susceptible to damage and less reliable for ongoing evaluation. Collaborative image reading is challenging when doctors are in different locations, hindering consultations and affecting outcomes. In emergencies, quick access to patient history and imaging is crucial, but current systems lack the necessary protocols and infrastructure. Moreover, the high volume of cases doctors handle daily requires rapid diagnostics, but the existing system doesn’t support swift expertise delivery, leading to delays in patient care.

To address these issues, we propose implementing digital solutions to improve radiology practices. Establishing a secure radiology image storage system will safely archive imaging results, making them easily accessible for efficient follow-up and eliminating disorganized archives. Creating a specialized sharing platform will enable seamless transmission of imaging results between specialists, optimizing communication and collaboration for more accurate patient care. Allowing doctors to examine images remotely through secure online access will eliminate the need for unsecured messaging apps and enhance data security. Developing a system utilizing an expertise data warehouse will enhance diagnostics by allowing quick access to previous conclusions, increasing efficiency and accuracy. By adopting these digital solutions, hospitals can overcome the limitations of film-based radiology images, significantly enhancing efficiency, security, and overall healthcare quality and laying a foundation for future advancements in medical imaging and collaborative care.

Invention Technical Description

Implementing a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) in rural Indonesian hospitals requires a tailored system suited to local constraints. The proposed PACS features a modular architecture with local servers using RAID-configured drives for data redundancy. To address unreliable power, it incorporates uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and solar-powered backups. Lightweight, open-source software optimized for low bandwidth ensures efficient image storage and retrieval, even with intermittent internet connectivity.

Connectivity issues are managed through asynchronous data synchronization, allowing local servers to sync with cloud storage and enable remote specialist access when the internet is available. This hybrid approach ensures continuous local operation, remote consultations, and data backup. The system integrates seamlessly with existing hospital information systems using standardized protocols like DICOM and HL7, promoting interoperability.

Data security is paramount; the PACS employs end-to-end encryption with AES-256 for data at rest and SSL/TLS for data in transit. Multi-factor authentication and role-based access control restrict data access to authorized personnel, complying with healthcare data regulations. The user interface is intuitive and localized in Indonesian, easing adoption by medical staff. Features like automated image compression optimize storage and bandwidth usage, while customizable reporting tools streamline workflows.

Adapted for rural settings, the system uses rugged hardware capable of operating in harsh environments. Cost-effectiveness is achieved through open-source software and standard hardware, reducing initial investment and maintenance costs. Embedded training modules assist users in real time, and remote support is available via integrated support tickets and diagnostic logs when connectivity permits.

By focusing on these technical adaptations, the PACS solution addresses the challenges of deploying advanced medical imaging in rural Indonesian hospitals. This enhances healthcare professionals’ capacity, improving patient care through better diagnostics and collaboration, and sets a precedent for sustainable healthcare technology in similar contexts.
